Moviegoers discover their inner Elf to help beat dementia

Moviegoers at Glengormley Movie House got into the Christmas spirit and unleashed their inner Elf at a special festive fundraising screening of the movie Elf to help beat dementia.

The elves took a little time out of their hectic Christmas schedule to recline in the luxury of the Movie House VIP cinema for the special screening, organised by Emily Wilson, whose husband Jim has Lewy Body Dementia. The screening and cinema were donated by Movie House owner Michael McAdam, whose mother has dementia, with all ticket sales going to Alzheimer’s Society.

Barry Smyth, Northern Ireland Operations Manager for Alzheimer’s Society, said: “It’s been great fun seeing so many elves coming along to see Elf the movie – Buddy wouldn’t be feeling quite so isolated and alone if he could see there are a few of us his size.

"Elf Day is fantastic fun but there’s a serious side to it as dementia is now the UK’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three minutes, and like Buddy, too many people are isolated and feel confused and alone.

More than 20,400 of the 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK live in Northern Ireland. And the national figure is set to rise to one million by 2021.
