Movie House Cinemas has cut the price of seeing 3D films by becoming the first cinema group in the UK and Ireland to drop its 3D “premium” fee. Like all cinemas, Movie House charged an additional fee when it introduced 3D at its Yorkgate/Cityside cinema in Belfast. The cinema charged an extra £1.50 per ticket for 3D movies – a fairly standard rate within the industry. But today the cinema’s Managing Director Michael McAdam announced that he was dropping this extra fee. “When we installed 3D we followed the lead set across the world to charge more for this premium experience. It is costly to install the projector and we also have costs for buying and cleaning the special glasses,” he said. “But we’ve received numerous complaints over the past months from customers who just don’t understand why they have to pay more to see a film in 3D. After much thought and consideration, we have decided to drop the charge so that people know what they will be paying when they come to Movie House. “3D is getting ever more popular and soon we’ll be installing a projector at our Dublin Road cinema. At the moment we have the family film UP from Disney in 3D with A Christmas Carol and Avatar to follow soon. It’s definitely the future but we want to make it accessible for all. With the current economic climate we want to make a trip to the cinema as affordable as possible for people,” he added. This is not the first time that Movie House has taken the lead with its pricing policy. The cinema refuses to charge a booking fee for online and phone bookings unlike most other cinemas. And the cinema also does not charge a higher price for weekend screenings. “I just think pricing should be clear and easy to understand,” Michael McAdam said. |
